A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
